"Consumers flock online for 24/7 health information, from the latest research on rare diseases to mothers' groups tweeting advice on colicky babies. But when it comes to reliable, easy-to-understand information on a wide range of medical, health and fitness issues, a number of new books belong in any informed patient's library—and as a bonus, some use Web sites to post the latest updates and build communities.
The 2009 crop includes a soup-to-nuts consumer medical guide and an inspiring memoir of an ultra-marathoner. Here are my picks for the best health books of 2009. (Note: Retailers often offer discounts on the list price".)
"Ask Dr. Marie" by Marie Savard ($24.95)
A physician who contributes to ABC News, Dr. Savard answers many of the questions women have about their anatomy—"the area below the belt and above the knee." In addition to providing checklists for gynecologic exams and advice on hormone-replacement therapy and birth control, she offers information on sexually transmitted diseases, bowel problems common to women and how a woman's mind-body connection differs from a man's, with tips for keeping stress at bay. Dr. Savard will also answer questions from readers at askdrmarie.net

"Our behalf of the Greater Washington Women’s Network, GWWN, an affiliate of the National Association for Female Executive, thank you for speaking on the topic,” Women Wellness Matters: Cervical Health and You”, on Wednesday, November 4 at the Steward Center, Washington, DC.
Our partnership with HealthyWomen was successful. They made arrangements for your speaking engagement and the complimentary book. They could not have chosen a better person.
The topic was engaging, educational and something the audience was very interested in. We received positive feedback regarding your presentation as well as the complimentary book, “Ask Dr. Marie…” that was shared."
-Mary Greene, Executive Director
"I just wanted to say that as a die-hard GMA fan I am always excited when they say you will be on the show! I have great respect for you and love to hear about whatever you are speaking about on the show. I am a twenty six year old woman in Kansas who has cervical dysplasia and HPV, as a side note I got the vaccine (its so amazing that it has been discovered and I highly recommend it to all women I know!) I guess I just want to say on behalf of women like myself who watch GMA and love watching you that I am grateful you are part of the team! I am visting your website today and would love to purchase your book as soon as I get some extra cash. Times are hard for everyone right now and I want you to know that your hopeful insight and medical knowledge inspires me everytime. So I guess I am just saying Thank you and continue doing what you do. I am behind you! Keep up the awesome work!"
-Love from Kansas

The following review appeared online with LIBRARY JOURNAL on Friday, 7/17/09.
Savard, Marie, M.D. Ask Dr. Marie: Straight Talk & Reassuring Answers to Your Most Private Questions. Globe Pequot. Aug. 2009. c.352p. illus. index. ISBN 978-0-7627-4944-7. $24.95. HEALTH
In this medical guide for women, Savard, medical contributor for ABC News and an internist specializing in women’s health, addresses basic anatomy and physiology, sexuality, and the importance of health care. She examines life stages and the accompanying bodily changes: puberty, childbirth, and menopause. The book's final sections cover the brain/body connection and such common health problems as urinary tract infections and digestive ailments. She also discusses the differences between men and women as they age and takes a liberal approach to hormone replacement therapy, arguing that perimenopausal women with no risk factors can take HRT and FDA-approved bioidentical skin patches safely.
Verdict: . . .This book takes a conversational tone and employs a supportive approach that will appeal to women in need of basic information.—Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., CA
"I attended University City high 99-2002. I was in the health charter and you came to my class and gave us the health system book to learn about our health and keeping records on our health. I just wanted you to know that I still use the book and it has helped me so much when I go to the doctors. I've told a lot of people about it over the years. It helps me manage my records well and it helps me have a good relationship with my doctors. I don't feel intimidated or confused when I have appointments and I feel like I have control. I just wanted to say thank you."
"I bought your book "Apples and Pears" expecting a rather frivolous read with
possibly a few interesting and useful weight-loss tips. (I am a 51 year old
woman living in Cape Town, South Africa and I had never heard of you
before.) Once I got into it I was absolutely amazed to find that it was
anything but frivolous and in fact helped to give me the best understanding
I have had so far about the effects of the various different hormones on our
bodies and the connection between body shape and disease.
Because of my age, I wanted to learn as much about menopause as I could in
order to decide whether to take HT or not. The books that I read were
either extremely pro-HT or extremely anti-HT and the more I read, the more
confused I became. However, I found that your book had the most balanced
approach and as I've said, gave me the clearest understanding I've ever had
of the intracacies and workings of my body. I came to the conclusion that
as a thinnish, pear-shaped Caucasian woman of Irish descent with a family
history of severe osteoporosis on my mother's side, and no family history of
heart disease or breast cancer, it would definitely be in my best interests
to take HT to avoid my mother's fate. Fortunately, my gynaecologist (who
is a woman) seems to have a very similar outlook and approach to yours and
thanks to your book I now have a much clearer understanding of her reasoning
and, as a result, much more faith in it."
"Dr. Savard got rave reviews. Everyone loved her talk and she got lots of questions. I reviewed the evaluations briefly and many people specifically mentioned how much they enjoyed her presentation. Many also said they would like to have her present again".

"I just wanted to drop a quick note to thank you for your unbiased opinion this morning on GMA regarding Vitamin D and how to manufacture it naturally. It seems for way too long that most media (mainly directed by marketing dollars) was swayed against ever stating that a little time in the sun is beneficial, perpetuating the "sunscare" epidemic amongst most American children as well as adults.
Again, Thank you..."
"I just wanted to mention that I thought you did an excellent job discussing my puberty study on GMA. I was impressed by how carefully you had read the study, that you could speak clearly and accurately about the results and their implications, and by your expert knowledge on puberty. In my many years of dealing with the press, yours was the most intelligent discussion in the mass media that I have heard of my work".

"The evaluation forms from the seminar wer incredible!!! Everyone thought you were terrific, and imparted valuable information that cleared up so many false impressions. AND ... not only did you make me look great for selecting you for this Executive Women's Breakfast, but I made a new friend!!!!
You were able to simplify so many confusing messages out there today and all of it made so much sense that it is easy to comply with it for a healthier life.
