Hormone Replacement Therapy:
It is NOT that Simple

The issue of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a critical one for millions of women approaching or already in menopause. New information on hormones and alternative therapies often dramatizes and politicizes the latest findings but unfortunately does little to address each individual woman's circumstances and needs. What is right for one woman may not be right for another - yet all women must address this critical passage at some point in their lives.

Marie Savard, M.D. is a nationally known women's health, menopause and osteoporosis expert, champion of patient empowerment and creator of The Savard System of personal health management. Recognizing that women make most of the health care decisions for themselves and their families, she demystifies the health care system and gives practical and potentially lifesaving advice on everything from the latest women's health issues to how to manage and control your own health care during menopause and beyond. Dr. Savard shows you why you must be at the center of your own health care - and arms you with the revolutionary yet commonsense steps that tell you:

  • Why you must trust your own instincts and believe that YOU are the best
    expert on you

  • Why you must collect original copies of all your medical records and test results - and how it can be done

  • Why you must acquire a working knowledge of all aspects of aging and menopause-and where to find the latest information

  • Which tests, exams, and immunizations you should routinely receive - and how to read and understand test results including bone density and Pap tests, the new DNAwithPAP test, and mammogram reports

  • How to be an active partner with your doctor - with a health journal, a "health buddy", and more

  • How to design a personalized preventive health schedule and daily routine including vitamins, diet and exercise

She will share insider secrets about menopause and show each participant how to design a personalized program that is unique for them. She tells many vivid stories about her personal experience as a 53 year-old perimenopausal woman and the thousands of women she has treated during more than two decades of clinical practice.

Empowering Patients to be Effective Collaborators: It's Good Medicine for Everyone

Research has shown that the more informed and involved a patient/caregiver is, the better the health outcome. This is especially important in the area of disease prevention and chronic disease management where self-management is critical. Dr. Marie Savard, a former nurse, internal medicine physician and patient rights champion has developed a simple but revolutionary system to teach patients how to manage and monitor their own health care and collaborate effectively with their health care team. She will share with you her approach and the tools she has developed to help patients receive the best care possible.

  • Identify common patient beliefs and behaviors that can jeopardize patient care and treatment

  • Employ strategies to help patients collect, organize and understand their own medical records

  • Identify specific techniques patients can use to better prepare for office visits and partner with their health care practitioner(s)

  • Learn the important skills necessary for shared-decision making between patient and clinician

  • Develop a simple monitoring system for patients to keep track of treatment goals and adhere to treatment

  • Teach patients how to design and implement their own preventive health care regimen, including immunization tracking, seeking appropriate preventive tests and making healthy life style choices

How To Stay Connected to the Consumer

During the past three decades, the health care system has become increasingly complex and fragmented. The long-standing paradigm of the all-knowing physician as the authority figure in a white coat doesn't work anymore. Medical research has yielded breakthrough after breakthrough in diagnostic techniques and treatment options giving many of us a chance to live longer and better. However the corollary is that while yesterday's physician knew just about all there was to know back in his time, no doctor today can keep up with every single one of the near-miracle advances that are being made almost every day, let alone keep track of all the information on any given patient. Research has shown that involved patients have better health outcomes and therefore promoting greater patient involvement in all aspects of their care has gained momentum.

Yet despite a long history of advocacy for increased patient involvement and evidence that patients want more information and participation in their care, much less attention has been paid to helping the physician and patient achieve this goal. The current national spotlight on medical mistakes and the quality chasm in health care provides us with the opportunity and obligation to address these problems.

If you had an emergency, how quickly could you put your hands on the vital information that could save your life? Who is responsible for your medical records? Who manages your preventive test schedule? How do you partner with your physician to get the best care possible? How can you avoid common medical mistakes?

Marie Savard, M.D., a former nurse, practicing physician and patient advocate describes the answer to these and many more questions in her session that emphasizes the consumer as the key ingredient to a sustainable health care solution for the 21st century. Dr. Savard has developed a simple but revolutionary approach to health care, which inspires and teaches individuals to manage and control their own health. She has testified before government agencies, piloted her system in clinical practices and is now bringing her system to a larger professional and lay audience.
Detailed in her two nationally acclaimed books, How to Save Your Own Life: The Savard System for Managing - and Controlling - Your Health Care (Warner Inc., 2000) and The Savard Health Record: A Six Step System for Managing Your Healthcare (Time-Life, Inc., 2000), her system teaches people to trust their own instincts, collect their medical records, research their conditions, shoulder the responsibility for preventive health and disease management, and work in a fruitful partnership with their doctors. She also provides advice for getting the best and safest hospital care as well.

This inspiring session will not only help you take charge of your health and your family's health, it will help you discover new and effective ways to restore trust in the doctor-patient relationship and bring power to the patient. This solution to poor communication and the rise of medical mistakes, the gap in quality health care, rising costs and frustrated consumers and providers is good medicine for everyone.

Patient Power: Whose Health is it Anyway

Many people know far more about their car's maintenance record or their pet's medical history than they know about their own health history. Not until mistakes are made and avoidable tragedies happen do many people recognize the importance of their medical histories. After three decades of experience as a medical practitioner, first as a nurse and then a general internist and primary care physician, Dr. Savard found herself on the flip side of health care. First her husband, then her father and three of her closest friends were stricken with life-threatening illnesses. Every time she went with them to the hospital or emergency room she became more convinced that the way things are is not the way they should be. She became even more passionate that patients must take control of their own health and health information. As a result, she developed a system, The Savard System, which inspires and teaches people how to manage their own health and their families health as well.

Dr. Savard firmly believes that patients are our greatest untapped resource in health care and that fully involved patients will transform our ailing system. She looks ahead into the 21st century and sees a new era in health care where patients routinely archive their medical records, have confidence in their instincts, research their conditions, shoulder the responsibility for prevention and learn to work in a true partnership with their doctors. She believes that people taking charge of their own health care is good medicine for everyone. During her presentation, she will show you how!
