Q. My bestfriend was recently diagnosed with ideopatheic gastroparesis. His main complaints are a chronic, maddening need to belch, epigastric pain after eating or drinking anything, and postprandial, early saiety. He has lost quite a bit of weight and is intensely depressed as he has lost quality of life. Have you or anyone you know had any success in treating this terrible disease? If so, what do we need to do to schedule a phone consultation?
A. A gastroenterologist who specializes in motility disorders (including diabetics who can get severe gastroparesis) at a major medical center/university would seem the best bet. I don't know where you live - but doubt I could be of help finding the perfect person. I would make many phone calls and do searches of the university hospitals in your area.
Q. Is it true that "Pear" shaped women develop ovarian cancer more than other women?
A. I have not heard this and truthfully, would expect that apple-shaped women with infertility etc. would be more at risk for ovarian cancer. Have you seen any research studies? I would be interested.
COMMENT: I enjoyed reading the information contained in your web site about patient records. I not only agree with your point of view, my wife and I have had several occasions where access to medical records was or could have been important. We travel all over the world on our sailboat, and in most countries, you carry your medical information with you. After living outside the US for 7 years, we realize just how awful the health care system is in the US.
When we return, I will make it a condition before seeking medical treatment that I keep the records, but my reason for writing is really what can I do to help make sure that the laws and policies of medical facilities provide this information? I realize that many people, in fact, maybe most people will have no interest in maintaining their medical records, but as you said, in this world of 10 minute Dr. visits, it becomes more and more important. Also, why is it that US Dr's do not accept emails with patient information? No matter where I am, I email My Dr. with blood test information he asks for, even when I am not in the same country. I get an email back to adjust this or that and I see her when I get back.....or transfer to another Dr. So, In closing, I would like to lend my support..... Please tell me how to direct my efforts.
